Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is our lightest form of sedation. Once you're in the dentist's chair, a small mask is placed over your nose, and the flow of nitrous oxide is administered. Nitrous oxide allows your mind and body to enter a state of relaxation and lightness. It's ideal for patients who want to drive themselves to and from their appointment and not have sedation fatigue interrupt the rest of their day.
Sometimes, nitrous oxide alone might not help you feel completely at ease. That's why we usually recommend patients with moderate to severe anxiety combine nitrous oxide with oral conscious sedation. While, as the name implies, you don't fall asleep during conscious sedation, virtually all patients enter such a deep state of relaxation that they experience an amnesic effect that allows them to forget most (if not all) of their procedure once it's over.
